Tuesday, August 29, 2006 - A long school day and I don’t care
August 29th, 2006
Ani took a very long time to finish her schoolwork today and for once I don’t care. I don’t care because I was not sitting next to her trying to keep her on task. I did remind her a few times that she needed to finish her schoolwork and it would be ideal to finish it before her father got home from work. She was astonished that even though I reminded her she needed to finish I told her it was still up to her when to get it done and she didn’t have to finish it *right now*. Of course she wasn’t doing school all day straight. In fact most of the day was what she called a “break.”
She did finish her list before Jamie got home, but only just. She was still fixing two incorrect math problems when he arrived home. Those math problems wouldn’t have been wrong if she took her time writing numbers and did not write 4’s and 9’s pretty much identically and quickly written 0’s like 6’s. It’s pretty bad when you can’t decipher your own writing, but that’s a whole other issue.
So, anyway, she got started on her work before 9. By the time I came downstairs she had read two pages in the Usborne book and was almost done coloring a Persian rug (she has the choice to paint or color it) for history. When I came down she informed me the Persians were conquered by Alexander the Great. So, obviously, she is doing the assignments like she says she is.
Together we worked on learning the Latin adjective endings masculine, feminine, and neuter first and second declension chant. That was kind of fun, actually, since it’s just -us, -o, -i, -um, -o, etc. sounds. I read “Fall of the House of Usher” from Tales of Mystery & Terror (great illustrated classics) aloud. These stories are peculiar and morbid. I’m familiar with the stories but I’ve never actually read them. I can’t say I really want to read the “real” versions. I read 10 pages of volume 5 of the Illustrated Book of Mormon aloud. Ani’s not too into this part since we’re in the thick of the wars and Captain Moroni (who was, truly, quite cool). I read the part of Story of the World volume 1 on A New Empire to Ani. She narrated it. We read about Bizet for music history. Ani took a misspelled words spelling test. She finally actually paid attention when she reviewed the words yesterday. She still misspelled diamond but the rest she got right. All that took about an hour.
The rest of school Ani did on her own throughout the day. She worked on memorizing her list of major Greek gods. She did two pages of Spelling Workout C. She did copywork (My brothers are Cameron and Fritz. - written in cursive). She did free writing with the prompt of Ani (I haven’t looked to see what she wrote yet). She read lesson 7 of the McGuffey Fourth Reader. She did lesson 44 in Rod & Staff English 3 including worksheet 29. She did test 19 of Math-U-See Delta. She played with her Flashmaster. She worked in Rosetta Stone.
Yesterday we read: (chapter book) Fairy Realm book 6 The Unicorn by Emily Rodda, (childrens books) Scooby-Doo and the Mummy’s Curse, and (Ani read to herself) Dennis the Dragon Finds a New Job by June Woodman.

How did I know this was going to be your blog - lol! Good for you for giving Ani the space to decide when she’ll finish. That’s hard to do, but you did!
