Centrists We Are
September 26th, 2006
Jamie is always making fun of me because of some of my seemingly conflicting political views. In Virginia we don’t claim affiliation with a political party when we register to vote. When we lived in Maryland we had to. I really wanted to write utopian communist but I didn’t think they (whoever they is) would like that. So I declined to affiliate. That’s what I wrote. Decline to affiliate. The problem is I am left on some things, right on others, and can see both sides on others.
So last night I found this little quiz that only had questions about personal and economic things so it was far from an accurate portrayal of what one’s true political feelings might be. I took the quiz and I am a centrist. One block northwest (left toward liberal, up toward libertarian) from center. No wonder I can’t claim a particular party. I’m just confused.
But now Jamie can make fun of me more. He took the quiz and he’s a centrist, too. But he’s so centrist he is right exactly at the middle point. So he was laughingly calling me a liberal because, clearly, I am so much more liberal than he is being one whole block northwest of his point. I think I’ll start telling people I’m a liberocrat centrist. It’ll go right along with the whole homeschooling, homebirthing, non-circing, cloth diapering, extended nursing, co-sleeping (or any of those other “weird” things I do) smile, nod, this woman is insane sort of thing I get anyway.
Of course being non-affiliated can be amusing sometimes. During the last presidential election the CBS people in DC had a group of people come to watch the debates and then be on the news afterwards to talk about our reactions. Jamie and I went to the final debate screening. It is really kind of funny to think about two people who don’t even OWN a TV going to a TV studio to watch a televised debate. It was afterwards that made me wonder about the news in general. All those who were registered non-affiliated (which, remember, ALL Virginians are!) were considered “undecided” and all those registered democrat were considered going to vote for Kerry and all those registered republican were considered going to vote for Bush. Uh, sure. Not true, but whatever (I knew exactly who I was going to vote for, thank you). We all played our parts well and those of us assigned to be undecided pretended the debate swayed us in some way.
As a side note, Ani did all her subjects yesterday except her math page. She is really avoiding that math. She’ll like the next lesson better. No double digit dividing for a few days. I’m very happy to have Cameron home. He’s such a sweet boy. Fritz continues to get better so that’s a very good thing. And happy 36th birthday to my big brother!

My husband is a nominal Republican, and I am a nominal Democrat. However, we both consider ourselves Independent. I don’t think that not neatly fitting one’s world view into a “party platform” makes one confused. *LOL* By the way, I love your new template!
