Naming Babies

h1 October 30th, 2007

One of the most fun things about having a new baby is getting to name them. But after three kids I am pretty much out of names. I’m really not sure how people with a dozen kids come up with all the names. Maybe I’ll be like Jamie’s grandparents and actually truly run out of names. Five of their six daughters have first and middle names. Jamie’s mom, the sixth daughter, has only a first name. I guess 11 girl names was their limit.

I had picked Ani’s name - Anastasia Sariah - when I was 9. Cameron’s middle name - James - is the same as Jamie’s middle name. I’m not really sure who came up with Cameron. Fritz I named - Frederick David Harold - after lots of family. Frederick, called Fritz, was my grandfather, David is my brother, and Harold was Jamie’s dad’s first name. He died while I was pregnant with Fritz.

If Fritz was a girl the name would have been Katarina Michelle and we would have used the nickname Kati. I don’t think I want to use the name Katarina anymore. Michelle will be the middle name if this baby is a girl. That’s my sister’s name. Ani likes the name Susie or Susannah (after my aunt who is not named Susie, but has been called Susie since birth). Jamie likes Gwynne.

For a boy I like Elijah because of the whole turning the hearts to the fathers family history thing. Jamie doesn’t. He prefers Malachi which is the Bible book where those verses appear. But my friend loves the name Malachi and her husband probably won’t let her use it so that just wouldn’t be very nice if we used it. On Saturday Cameron decided we should name the baby Adam if it is a boy. We went to dinner at Red Lobster and the manager said his name was Adam. Fritz started yelling “Adam” over and over and Cameron immediately suggested it for the baby’s name. Perhaps we’ll use Walter as a middle name if the baby is a boy born near it’s due date. My grandfather’s birthday was June 7th, the day the baby is due. My other grandfather, the one Fritz is named after, was born July 9th, two days before Fritz’s birthday.

So who knows what this baby will be named. We may not decide for sure until after it arrives. Maybe we’ll take Cameron’s suggestion from today and name the child Rambunctious.

  1. Post lots of “baby name” posts… I am totally stumped on baby names already! I am super picky about how a name flows together though, and my last name is proving difficult to find matches for.

  2. You know the rule of thumb: stand on your back step and scream the name. If it sounds good it’s a keeper. ;)

  3. Oh, but you have to scream first, middle and last all together. THEN if it sounds really good, you’ve found it.

  4. You put up a post on naming babies, and don’t get in the obligatory dig at your brother’s naming choices? I don’t know, kid, you’re slipping…
